Summer Scholarship Conditions and Rules



DESCRIPTION
    The Alliance Française de Buffalo (AFB) is offering a $4,000 scholarship to be used toward a four-week summer study program offered by Alliance Française in Strasbourg, France. The primary purpose of this scholarship is to provide students with the opportunity to become more proficient in the French language and to understand and appreciate French culture. Priority will be given to a mature high school student with a profound interest and commitment to the study of French and who has not previously studied in a francophone country.

ELIGIBILITY
  1. Candidates must be seniors in a high school located in Western New York.
  2. Candidates must be at least 18 years old at the time that the program begins.
  3. Candidates must be enrolled in an advanced French course.
  4. Student's parent or guardian must sign the application indicating that the candidate has permission to study and live in France for 4 weeks this summer.
  5. The scholarship must be used during the summer of 2009.
  6. The student must agree to supplement the $4,000 scholarship, if necessary.
  7. Applicants must be American citizens by birth or by naturalization.
  8. Applicants must secure a passport in order to travel overseas.
INELIGIBILITY
  1. Native speakers of French from any francophone country (exceptions will be made only for those who came to the United States as children and whose linguistic competence in French cannot be qualified as native or near-native).
  2. Non-US citizens.
FUNDS PROVIDED
    The AFB offers a scholarship of Four Thousand Dollars ($4,000). The award will be announced by mid-February, 2009. The award is to be used for tuition, travel and accommodations for the four-week long Alliance Française in Strasbourg summer program in France. The AFB is not responsible for expenses such as visa, pocket-money, on-site excursions.
APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURES
    Please submit the following items (1 - 4) to Mrs. Patricia Schiavone, AFB President, 103 Eastland Parkway Cheektowaga, NY 14225. All items must be postmarked by January 5, 2009.
    1. Scholarship Application Form (original + 2 copies)
    2. Essay in French (original + 2 copies) on this topic: Describe yourself, your current level of French study, why you are studying French, and your reasons for wanting to study in France this summer. (250-500 words)
    3. Transcript (1 official copy from your high school + 2 copies)
    4. Two letters of recommendation written by those who can attest to your character, maturity, merit and interest in French (original, in sealed envelope)
    5. Eligible applicants will be interviewed by an AFB panel in mid-January, 2009.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE WINNER
  1. The winner must send to Mrs. Patricia Schiavone, AFB President (address above) a copy of the official acceptance into the Alliance Française in Strasbourg summer program and proof of possession of a U.S. passport by May 1, 2009.
  2. The winner must send an electronic photo of him/herself to Ms. Jessica Blaser at melleblaser@gmail.com by April 1, 2009. Ms. Jessica Blaser will publish the photo in the AFB's newsletter, Les Nouvelles de l'Alliance.
  3. While on the summer program, the winner must keep a weekly journal in French to be submitted to the AFB upon return.
  4. The winner must submit an article in French or English describing the summer experience for the AFB's Les Nouvelles de l'Alliance by August 15, 2009.
