En 1880, le géographe français, Onésisme Reclus, invente le terme " Francophonie " pour définir l'ensemble des personnes et des pays utilisant le français. La fondation de plusieurs groupes internationaux se poursuit à travers les années, et c'est en 1970, au Niger, que la Francophonie fut formellement fondée. De nos jours, elle est connue sous le nom de " l'Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF). Elle regroupe 53 Etats et gouvernements membres de plein droit, 2 membres associés et 13 observateurs répartis sur les cinq continents, rassemblés autour du partage d'une langue commune, le français, qui est parlé par 200 millions de personnes à travers le monde.

Following the international celebration of La Journée de la Francophonie, the Alliance Française de Buffalo started its own event in 2001. Every other year it takes a different shape, from a movie and discussion, to a table ronde animated with specialists in different fields, followed sometimes by ethnic food.

2007 - Presenters, documentaries, displays of geographical maps, textiles and artifacts on Indochina
2005 - Round Table and Multimedia Presentation on Maghreb, with Rafika Merini, Malha Zerouki, Moshan Lachaal, and Gérard Bucher as a moderator.
2003 - Haiti, discussion with Nicole Lee
2002 - Senegal, discussion with Judy Scales-Trent and Abdou Sarr
2001 - Table Ronde Bilingue sur le Canada francophone, with Francois Paré, Marc Bourgeois, Marc-Yvain Giroux, Kandace Lombart, and Gérard Bucher as a moderator.
